Those darn search engines….

Posted by on Friday, 26 November, 2004

🙁 I checked the status of this webpage in the big search engines, and I can’t say that I’m overjoyed by the results, even though my webpage shows up pretty high in the rankings.

I searched using the terms “johan groth japan” and this is the results I got:

Yahoo : Ranked 25th (Not bad…)
MSN : 2nd (WOOHOO!)
Google : Not ranked within the first 400… However, I am mentioned on 17th place on the international site (3rd on the Swedish) through a friend’s webpage (thanks Henrik!)
Webcrawler : 10th (Yeah! But this is a meta-search engine, so maybe it doesn’t count…?)
Lycos : 3rd (OH YEAH!)
HotBot : 3rd (Coool!)

So there you have it, and also the reason for my not being 100% happy. When GOOGLE has like, 115% market share, does it even matter where the other search engines rank you? *sigh*

So if anyone has any tips on how to get Google to index my pages, just let me know. I’ve seen their damn spider in the weblogs, so they HAVE been there, that’s for sure.

Cleaning up the HTML….

Posted by on Wednesday, 24 November, 2004

Well, some technical info for anyone (anybody? helloooo???) who is interested…

I’m trying to clean up the whole website and make it 100% HTML 4.01 compliant. This is the first step towards making it XHTML-compliant, which will be my next step.

(Note, it does not include this weblog, since I didn’t code it – and it’s too much of a hassle to edit other people’s sources…)

:plain:

[EDIT]
Well… I’ve cleaned up all HTML within the ‘johan’ subfolder; except for the frame-index. It seems it’s impossible  to get frames with no framespacing and still use valid HTML 4.01. So I scrapped the idea of using a valid frameset and instead used another validator – a custom one made by someone who actually understands the stupidity of NOT allowing either ‘framespacing’ or ‘border’ as attributes for frameset. Thanks to Jukka Korpela! :satisfied:

Woohoo – a digital era

Posted by on Monday, 22 November, 2004

🙂 Well in regard to my earlier entry (see below) regarding my lack of a digital camera, things changed the last few days!

So I finally got my hands on a digital camera, as a birthday present! Yesssss! A wonderful little machine called Canon Powershot A95. The result of this will soon be noticed in the Gallery section of the webpage, count on that!

Further…. In a stroke of bad (?) luck, my cell phone broke down today so I had to go buy a new one. I settled for the latest Sony-Ericsson model (non-3G) : A1402SII which has a camera as well….

So within a few days, two digital cameras actually. Neat-o, to use an old expression.

Tarento – what is their talent anyway?

Posted by on Tuesday, 9 November, 2004

So, as I have stated in an earlier entry, in Japanese entertainment TV, you see the same famous people over and over again. It’s like an inner circle of celebrities who are on ALL the different shows.

And who are these people? Well, to the best of my knowledge, though I might be wrong (I haven’t investigated this thoroughly enough to claim absolute expertise), you can divide the Japanese TV-personalities into several distinct groups:

1) Idols (pop-stars, especially young female ones fall under this category)
2) Other music artists (rock bands, singers, etc.)
3) /TV-drama/ actors (non-TV actors are not as frequently on TV, naturally)
4) Sports celebrities
5) Ex-Idols (Most people on TV fall under this or the next two categories)
6) Tarento (i.e.’talents’ – people whose claim to fame are their multiple ‘talents’. It’s hard to say exactly what these talents are, but it involves being on TV a lot….)
7) Models (and some notorious ex-models)
8) Comedians

Well, I don’t think I’ve missed any categories. As stated above, the *main* types of people you see frequenting (and, running) the entertainment or variety shows, are categories 5, 6, and 7. I guess it’s because they simply have a lot of time to be on TV, and some of them really don’t have any other skills than simply being on TV, uttering witticism (or, not so witty things).

Well, I don’t know if this entry really does anyone any good or adds to anyone’s general, useful knowledge, but I still wanted to get it off my chest…:satisfied:

This picture pretty much sums it up…

Oh, and although I’m not ignorant and nave enough to believe EVERYTHING Michael Moore says, I find this latest entry on his website pretty good:
