Monk and Louis Vuitton
This picture, which I snapped today in Ginza while riding the Skybus tour, sums up what Japan is all about in one picture, don’t you think?

  1. I’m especially enamored with the imagery of the namebrand store being much much larger than the monk.

    Shopping rules supreme!

Haha…. Wish I could say I carefully planned the composition of the photo, but I just did the best I can from a moving bus… On the other hand, it did turn out pretty nicely, capturing the spirit of modern Japan…

  3. yes, it sounds sum up japan…

  4. Heh, that really is a great shot! Very nice. :)

mmmhmm it’s a good juxtaposition of symbols! but those Buddhist monk guys who hang around in the streets are basically beggars, right? and probably pretty artificial in what aspects of religion they actually represent. I got harassed by one once and it was an odd experience to say the least. He seemed pretty disconnected, not just from the busy world around him but from everything I knew of his religion.

Wow, you’re even more cynical than I am, Tani!! ;-)

there are real and fake monks. Real ones have a permit, fake ones don’t. You can ask to see the permit, but I never have (too embarrassing).
